HP Printer Cartridge Not Recognized? 5 Checks to Try

Home inkjet printer with a cartridge beside it and a status light.

If your printer says it can't recognize a cartridge, don't assume the cartridge is empty or defective. It might not be seated correctly, the protective material might still be attached, or the cartridge number might not match your printer. Work through these checks carefully and follow the instructions for your exact model.

1. Read the printer's message

Note the exact error and which cartridge it names. Check your printer manual or manufacturer's support instructions for that message, since steps can differ between models.

2. Check that the cartridge is installed correctly

With the printer stopped and following its manual, remove and reinstall the named cartridge so it sits firmly in its slot. Check that any protective tape or packaging has been removed as instructed. Avoid forcing the cartridge into place.

3. Confirm the cartridge number

Compare the full number on the cartridge with the supplies information for your printer model. A similar-looking number or color isn't enough to confirm compatibility. If you're unsure where to find the numbers, read where to find your printer model and cartridge number.

4. Check the contacts only as the manual advises

Some printer makers provide specific guidance for cleaning contacts. Follow only the instructions for your model, and don't touch the ink nozzles or electrical contacts unless the manual tells you how to do so.

5. Try the manufacturer's recommended restart

If the message remains, use the restart or reset steps given in your printer's manual. If the error continues, contact the printer maker or check whether the cartridge listing confirms your exact printer model.
